Bent Knee Calf Raise (Soleus)

Calf raises with the knees bent to load the soleus, the deep calf muscle runners undertrain. For Achilles pain, heel pain and running strength.

How to do it

Stand with fingertips on a wall. Bend the knees about 30 to 45 degrees and keep that bend the whole set. Rise slowly onto the toes and lower slowly, about 3 seconds each way. You will feel it lower in the calf. Build toward single leg, then add weight.

Common mistake

Straightening the knees as you rise. If the knee angle changes, the soleus stops doing the work.

Helps with

  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Calf strength for runners
